DMK chief and former Tamil Nadu Chief minister M Karunanidhi appears to be critical if the sudden developments in the city are any indication. In a latest development, the area around Kauvery Hospital where the Kalaignar is being treated is cordoned off.
While thousands of party workers and supporters of M Karunanidhi are demanding an update on the DMK patriarch's health, it is learnt that security has been tightened across Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.
Latest news breaking on regional news channels have given rise to speculation that Karunanidhi could be reportedly dead.
Speculation is rife that Karunanidhi is reportedly dead and that the police and the government were trying to keep the information under wraps to maintain law and order situation in the state given the huge number of followers the DMK chief and Kalaignar enjoys.
A few channels also reported that the very fact that the hospital had been forced to release a health bulletin late in the night suggests that there was something amiss about the entire scenario.
As rumours and unconfirmed news about M Karunanidhi’s death spread, Twitter was flooded with prayers and messages from his supporters. A few shared their thoughts on the leaders, while others offered prayers fervently hoping the Kaliagnar lived on. Here's a look at the tweets
My dad is from Karnataka but he is still glued to the Tamil News channel watching the updates of @kalaignar89. Says when he was kid, heard a lot about the CM of neighbouring state!

We are praying for you sir. A true legend. Legendary song.
One man who made Tamil Nadu no 1 state in India.

According to latest reports, the situation at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai is tense with police barricades all around. Thousands of supporters have assembled at the premises demanding that they get a glimpse of their beloved leader.
Besides, the situation also resembles the way it was at the time of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's death.
The crowd at Kauvery Hospital resembles the Apollo Hospital scene when news of Jaya's death broke.
It may be recalled that M Karunanidhi is being treated for urinary tract infection and fever. He was moved from his Gopalapuram residence in Chennai to Kauvery Hospital on Friday after his blood pressure levels dropped.
He was being closely monitored by a battery of medical experts who said his condition had been stabilised and that the DMK patriarch was responding to treatment.
The latest health bulletin released by Kauvery hospital late in the night states that his vital signs were normalising. It is learned that the Chennai Police has requested Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Palaniswamy to avoid visiting the hospital to ensure the situation doesn’t go out of control.
Over the last few weeks, political leaders cutting across party lines have been paying the ailing leader a visit to wish him a speedy recovery.
Karunandhi's son MK Stalin has appealed to the party cadre as well as supporters and the general public to exercise restraint and maintain calm.
Earlier in the day, the police had to resort to mild lathicharge to bring the situation under control. Emotions are running high with Kalaignar fans chanting slogans at the hospital premises.
More details awaited.
